A Scottish Country Dance Weekend Workshop, April 13-15, 2007
On the Grounds of the National Cathedral School, Washington, DC
Teachers
Norah Link began dancing as a social pastime and
welcome break from studying while at University, where
she studied ballroom, ballet and ballet-jazz. She started
Scottish Country Dancing in 1986, and since then has
also enjoyed Scottish Step Dancing. Norah has been
teaching Scottish Country Dance since 1993, and she
earned her RSCDS Teacher Certificate in 1998 after
studying with Elinor Vandegrift at the TAC Summer
School Candidate Class.
Norah has formerly competed as a premier-level
Highland dancer, and holds an Associate membership in
the British Association of Teachers of Dancing
(Highland Branch). She has taught workshops in Scottish
Country Dancing in Ontario, New Hampshire,
Newfoundland, and at Pinewoods Dance Camp (near
Plymouth MA); and in Scottish Ladies' Step Dancing at
Albany NY and at Pinewoods.
Norah loves all aspects of SCD, including the music
and spirit of the dance, the intricate patterns we make as
we dance, and its special sociability - the fun, and the
graces.
Norah will teach a Sunday afternoon Ladies' Step Class.
John was born in Scotland, and at the age of 9 he
was hauled off, literally, to Scottish Country Dance
classes. His eloquent pleas for mercy were totally
ignored by his very Scottish mother who informed him
in no uncertain terms that, as she had already paid the
half-guinea for his initiation into this aspect of Scottish
culture, HE WAS GOING and that was that!!!
In 1959, he started his professional teaching career
in Hamilton, Ontario. He received his Prelim Certificate
in September 1961 and Teacher's Certificate in October
1961. Yes, both parts within 6 weeks (Miss Milligan was
the examiner in both cases).
Since obtaining his certificate, he has taught Branch
classes at all levels and has been fortunate to have been
invited to teach at workshops throughout North America.
He has also taught weeklong schools at all levels for
TAC; for Thistle School of Country Dance in North
Carolina; and for the Australian Winter School.
To John, one of the most rewarding assignments has
always been the tutoring of Candidate Classes, which he
have done for TAC; for Thistle School; for both the
Hamilton and Buffalo Branches and for Tokai Branch in
Japan. His greatest hope is that he has been able to pass
on some of the tremendous pleasure and fun that he has
found in SCD to all those with whom he has come in
contact. He considers SCD a great, great game and
hopes that it is one that will survive the trials of change,
politics, and time.
John will teach a Sunday afternoon Teachers' Workshop.
