A Scottish Country Dance Weekend Workshop, April 1-3, 2005
On the Grounds of the National Cathedral School, Washington, DC

Teachers

Elaine Brunken, Laurel, Maryland

I was born along time ago, or so it seems, in Falkirk, Scotland. I trained as a Phys. Ed. teacher, majoring in dance, at DCPE in Edinburgh. I taught PE and Health for 4 years, prior to my immigration to the USA in 1978 (I told you it was a long time ago). I learned to dance when I was about 4, in my mum's class, I learned at a very young age, that if I went dancing, I got to stay up late. A very good practice for the dance weekends too! I teach regularly in Northern Virginia and on occasion in the Washington D.C. branch. I was co-tutor for the teacher candidates class in the D.C. area for the last four exam tours, and have taught many workshops in North America and Canada. I love the magic moments in dancing, when the phrasing, the music and the movement come together. It doesn't happen often, but when it does... WOW! I like to emphasize ALL aspects of technique, not JUST the footwork. In my other life, I manage a team of systems analysts. I have two grown children (21 and 18), and 3 cats. A lover of red wine, old movies, good books and singing, there just isn't enough time to do it all... but I try.

Martin E. Mulligan, Newfoundland, Canada

Born in Glasgow, I started Scottish Country Dancing with Barbara Little's Harvard University class in 1977. I danced with the Boston Branch Cambridge class, and with the Boston Branch Demonstration Team until 1981. Since leaving Boston, I have danced with the Pittsburgh Scottish Country Dancers, the Loch Michigan Scottish Country Dancers (which became the Chicago Branch in 1986), and, since 1988, I have lived, danced and taught in St. John's, Newfoundland. I passed my Preliminary Test in Boston the Spring of 1981, and my Teacher's Certificate at the TAC Class in St. Catherine's in 1986. I have taught Scottish Country Dance weekend workshops in Madison, Chicago, Charlottetown, Halifax, Pictou, Montreal, Moncton and Adelaide. I have been on the teaching staff at Pinewoods, Scottish Camp at Mendocino, and the 2002 Australian Winter School in Sydney. In real life, I'm a molecular biologist and Head of the Biochemistry Department at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
